Born, in 1962, and raised in New Zealand, Gayatri turned vegetarian then 3 months later vegan in the early 1980's after quitting a 6+ year pack a day smoking habit. She left NZ and travelled through South East Asia to England in 1985. She worked there before moving to the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center in London.

She did her Yoga Teachers Training January 1986 on Paradise Island, Bahamas and  joined the Ashram as a staff member. April 1986 the Ashram sent her New York City to replace the 'burnt-out' staff there.

She lived and studied at the NYC Chelsea Center and often was the driver to the Woodbourne Ashram in Upstate NY for the week-end retreats.

She continued to teach private and group yoga classes including the Psychiatrists at Harlem Hospital and a unique class in Diane Von Furstenberg's  Hotel apartment suite once.

1988 she moved to Brooklyn and started as a manager at the original Angelica Kitchen on 8th Street owned by Leslie McEachern.

Gayatri studied and became certified as a Childbirth Educator and worked at LICH and St Vincents hospitals in addition to doing private classes.

Somewhere in the late 1980's she moved to Soho and decided to not  continue toward midwifery and instead be a naturopath. She enrolled in a GED course at BMCC and after passing entered the Associate degree in Nursing program. About the same time she discovered Colonics and apprenticed with her therapist before taking the certification course in Florida. She then worked at La Casa from when they opened in 1993 till about 2002 and it is there that she now sees her colonic clients.

She graduated BMCC and passed the NY State Nursing Licensing Exam.
June 1998 she was bitten by the Argentine Tango bug and went head on into a relationship with a fellow beginner, the dance and the culture. The first of many trips to Buenos Aries being in May 1999 followed by her first of several Tango Tours in October 1999.

Next was collaboration with Lucille Krasne on the first NYC Tango Festival in 2001 and subsequent New Year's Eve parties until Ms Krasne handed over both projects to Gayatri under the umbrella of CELEBRATETANGO. She continued successfully organizing the NYC Tango Festival, USA Tango Championship and the USA Tango Film Festival up until 2014.

Gayatri chose October 2001 as the opening of her milonga 'La Boca'.  La Boca ran for over 6 incredible and successful years where she taught the beginners lesson passionately and assisted the most illustrious guest tango stars and musicians.

Gayatri completed 3 years of Shiatsu training at Doylestown School PA and then proceeded to study and became certified in Bowen Therapy. Both modalties were inspirsed by receiving treatments that offered relief for the back pain of an injury from 1982 and challenging scoliosis of the lumbar.

Most recently she has taken up karaoke and especially enjoys doing live band karaoke and singing on stage.

ARGENTINE TANGO

Argentine Tango has 2 very clear roles, leader (idea) and follower (manifestation). For the conversation of the dance to be a pleasurable flow for both partners, communication must be clear. Gayatri Martin
Moving to music be it Argentine Tango, Salsa, freestyle, by myself or with others feeds my soul and allows me the expression of fun and joy through movement.
